Emily Hake Massie was raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She completed her undergraduate degree in Slavic Languages & Literature at Connecticut College and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting at The University of Wisconsin - Madison.

Emily is based in Richmond, Virginia where she works as a freelance scenic artist for theatrical and commercial clients in the Mid-Atlantic region. She is currently serving as adjunct faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University. Emily has exhibited her paintings in the Midwest and Eastern US. Her abstractions explore intersections of contemporary consumer culture and archetypes of femininity. Her studio practice is rooted in a relentless curiosity of the materiality of paint and the visceral experience of color.
